Broadband refers to a communication system which transports information across a single channel, such as cable, DSL, ISDN, and corporate LAN. Cable operators are transforming from entertainment companies into complete communication providers, since they are well suited to deliver high-speed Internet access and other Internet Protocol (IP) services to businesses and consumers. The demand for broadband connectivity in the home, for data and video transmission, continues to grow exponentially as does the convergence of wired and wireless access to the data.
At the back-end of this market are the hubs/HFC networks connecting the subscriber’s premises to the headend/backbone infrastructure. The majority of the equipment in the broadband market is found within this headend which brings external services – satellite video, off-the-air video, Internet data, and voice – into the cable operator’s access network. MSOs are pushing fiber closer to subscribers than ever before through fiber deep and remote phy distributed network architectures.
